Activity 2: The Great Taupo Cycle Challenge [4 points]

Every year approximately 7500 people arrive in Taupo, New Zealand to compete in a one-day cycling race around Lake Taupo. The race route is 160 km in length. Participants can choose to compete in the full race or the half-race (80 km). Let’s imagine that you were given a free ticket to compete in the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge next year and you were able to bring three people with you as your ‘support crew.’ Who would you bring with you?
If it was me, I would choose my son, Aronui, as one of my supporters because he’s really funny and energetic. I think that he would make sure that I had a great time and that I spent the entire day laughing and smiling. I would also choose my sister, Leigh, because she is very strong and fast. Thirdly, I would choose my co-leader, Hazel, because she is very organised and would make sure that we followed the trail and didn’t get lost!
On your blog, list the three people you would like to have on your Lake Taupo Cycle Race Support Crew. Tell us why you have chosen each person.

I have chosen Sam my oldest brother, because he is strong and he is so energinic and i will chose my other brother Loto, because he is funny and he is always  working out and he keeps pushing himeself to be a rugby player last of all i have chosen my brother peni because he is crazy and he loves to go on tirps and that is all the 3 people from my family to come with me to toupou.

WEEK 2: Water, Water, Everywhere

Welcome to the second week of the Summer Learning Journey. We hope that you enjoyed learning about the amazing land habitats that we have here in New Zealand and overseas. This week we are going to  focus on water; the lakes, rivers and oceans that make up our beautiful country. Are you ready to jump in and get wet? Let’s hope you brought your togs!

DAY 1: Swimming with the Fish

Activity 1: Surfs Up! [4 points]

In New Zealand we have many beautiful beaches and stunning waterfalls. One of the most spectacular waterfalls is called Kitekite and it is located in Piha, a small village west of Auckland. Tourists and locals flock to Piha during the summer season to enjoy the waterfall, the local beach, and the great surf. Have you ever tried surfing? Although I have never surfed many of my friends have and they absolutely love it. In fact, it is their favourite summer activity! What is yours?

`Activity 3: Going, going….gone [10 points]

Over the years, scientists have made some surprising discoveries. One of

these discoveries is that we have entire cities (e.g. Jakarta, Indonesia and Venice, Italy) that are slowly sinking into the ocean. Scientists believe that, one day, the cities will disappear completely under the water. Yikes!

Some of the residents (people living in the cities) have taken pictures of their neighbourhoods and written stories about their lives in order to make a record of what ‘life was like’ in their city before it disappeared.

Let’s imagine that New Zealand was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean next week (Eek!). Before it sinks you are asked to write a blog post telling people what life was like in New Zealand in 2018.

On your blog, post a description of life in New Zealand in 2018. Please remember that the people who read your post will have never been to New Zealand or even seen a picture so it is your job to ‘paint a picture’ of New Zealand using your words. You can also post pictures, if you wish. Be sure to fully attribute the pictures.

Well for you guys,girls,women and men New Zealand is the best place to live it doesn't have that much crimes. It’s a beautiful place to live. Awesome places to eat and delicious food. Beautiful homes and can’t forget the tallest building in New Zealand is actually in Auckland and the name of the building is the Sky Tower and Auckland is were I live so again New Zealand is a beautiful place to live.

Activity 2: Living on the Edge [4 points] While it can get quite cold in New Zealand, it rarely drops below freezing (00C). Most of the time the temperature in New Zealand is pretty mild. This is not the case in the tundra. The tundra is an area of land (biome) that is cold, dry and completely treeless. Did you know that the average temperature in the tundra is -280C? Over the past few years, however, the temperature in the tundra has been rising and the weather has been changing. Let’s imagine that your teacher decides to take you on a class trip to the tundra before the weather changes too much and you aren’t able to go. On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience. 

Dear mum I am really sad that you missed the trip to tundra.It was the best experience their the food was delicious there was nice people and can’t forget the nice places there are. I hope to go to tundra you soon so you can witness everything I witness. The last and the thing i didn’t enjoy about the trip is you mum i really missed you when i was on the trip because every time I think of you i cry myself to sleep. but either from that every thing was awesome.

DAY 5: Blink and You’ll Miss It
 
Activity 1: Towering Timbers [4 points]
There is a long and rich history of logging in New Zealand. Logging involves cutting down trees. The people who cut them down are called loggers. The trees that they cut down are sold and used to build things (eg. houses), to make products (eg. paper), and to generate (create) heat and power. Over the past two centuries, many of the trees in New Zealand have been cut down by loggers.

Some people like logging because it creates jobs for the loggers and generates money for New Zealand while others are against (opposed to) logging. Many of those opposed are worried that logging will damage the environment. It might also force animals who live in trees (eg. owls) to find new homes.
What do you think about logging?

I think that logging should not be allowed
1.because they are cutting down trees and trees give us oxagen to breath and if they keep cutting down trees we wnt have any more trees and we will die

2. Because brids build nest in trees so preditors dont eat the eggs and if they keep cutting down trees soon the birds will be endngerd and soon will be enstinced.

Activity 3: Salt and Pepper [5 + 5 possible bonus points]

Deep in the heart of Bolivia (a country in South America) lies a natural wonder unlike anything else. It is a massive area of salt, over 10 000 km2 large, that is referred to as the Uyuni Salt Flats.
Tourists who visit the flats often stay in hotels made completely out of salt (salt hotels). This is not the only unique hotel that you will find around the world. In fact, you can stay in hotels made entirely of ice (ice hotels) or glass (glass hotel). Let’s imagine that you were given enough money to build your very own hotel.
On your blog tell us where you would build your hotel and what you would use to build it. For an extra five points, use Google Drawings to design one room in your hotel. You can also use a paper and pencil to draw your room, take a picture of the drawing, and post it on your blog.

I would love to build my hotel in glen innes and the matirials i will build my hotel with is bricks for the outside and wood for the inside I chose brick for the outside because if the big bad wolf comes it won’t be able to blow the hotel down. Also I chose wood for the inside so in the rooms it won’t have a hard brick wall and so the inside will look nice. This is a picture of the holtel. <3

Activity 2: Pancakes and Maple Syrup? [4 points]

Aotearoa New Zealand is home to many spectacular sights and natural wonders. One of these is the Punakaiki Rocks and Blowholes located on the West Coast of the South Island. The Punakaiki rocks attract tourists from all over the world who are keen to see these amazing rock formations. Many people think that they look like pancakes stacked on top of one another. Pancakes are one of my favourite foods! They are delicious and pretty easy to make.

For this activity you are asked to choose one of your favourite foods. On your blog, write the name of your favourite food and then tell us how to make it. You may need to ask a family member, friend or Google (!) for help, if you do not normally make this food for yourself.

One of my favourite foods are butter chicken and this is how you make it

Place yoghurt, garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, garam masala and chilli powder in a glass or ceramic dish. Add chicken. Stir to coat.

Heat oil and butter in a heavy-based saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion.

Stir in cream. Simmer for a further 5 minutes or until heated throught

DAY 4: More than Meets the Eye

Activity 1: Scaling New Heights [4 points]
Aotearoa New Zealand is a country of mountains and valleys, dense forests, and sparkling oceans. At the centre of the South Island sits the tallest mountain in the country, Aoraki Mt Cook. It is the place where Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the top (summit) of Mt Everest, learned how to climb mountains. It was pretty difficult for him, at first, but Sir Edmund Hillary did not give up and, in 1953, he achieved this dream of climbing Mt Everest. His face can now be found on the New Zealand $5 note!
Let’s imagine that you met Sir Edmund Hillary in real life and were able to interview him.

Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund [10 points]

In 1961, a number of people came together to start an organisation called the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The main goal of this organisation was/is to protect life on earth. Hundreds of WWF staff work in countries all over the world trying to protect our planet and the animals who live here. Activity 2: The Secretive Skink [4 points]

We have a number of small lizards (geckos and skinks) living in New Zealand. One of the least common is the Chevron Skink. According to the Department of Conservation, Chevron Skinks live mostly on two islands - Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island. These islands are ‘animal reserves.’ Very few people, other than staff working for the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC), are allowed to live there. The DOC staff are called ‘Rangers.’ Their job is to protect the wildlife (animals and plants) living on the island.

Would you like to be a DOC ranger and live with the animals on Great Barrier Island?

Activity 1: Fantastic Beasts [4 points]


In New Zealand we have many unusual animals. One of the most unusual is the kiwi bird - a bird that does not have wings and can not fly. Pretty strange, eh?! J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, has recently written a new book about strange or unusual animals called ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’
For this activity, please watch this cool book trailer. Year 7 and Year 8 students in South Auckland, New Zealand helped to make it. Once you have watched the video, use your imagination and create your very own beast. What does your beast look, smell, feel, and sound like?

Hi this is Lenny. Lenny used to be cute and playful until 3 people came and stole him and he was shut down for 3 years. When i found him 3 years ago he turned into a killing machine. He was about to kill me then he remembers all the fun time we had together. Then he protected me and brought me to those 3 people they were my friends Harry,Tom and my best friend Toby. The machine was furious its teeth turns razor sharp and blood came drooping from his teeth my friends ran off and Lenny turns back into the cute maching I made.

Activity 3: Weird and Wonderful [10 points]

New Zealand is just one of many countries that has amazing plants and trees. In fact, the African desert is home to some pretty incredible plants, like the cactus. Some cacti are able to survive on as little as 3 millilitres (ml) of water a day. Wow!

Let’s imagine that you are given a cactus for your birthday. To keep it alive, you must give it 3 ml of water every day.

Over one full year, how much water will you need to give your cactus plant?

On your blog, tell us how to solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image, or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer in millilitres (ml)

1095ml’s Because If you had to pour 3mls of water on a catus for one year and there is 365 day’s in a year so we have to 3 times the 365 so it will be 3 x 365= and the ansure is 1095

Activity 2: Fabulous Ferns [4 points]

One of the most common plants found in New Zealand forests is the fern. It is a special, iconic symbol of New Zealand. You will find pictures of ferns on the jerseys of many famous sporting teams in New Zealand, including the New Zealand All Blacks.

Did you know that many of these teams also have the word ‘fern’ in their name? Use your best researching skills to find three New Zealand sporting teams who use the word ‘fern’ in their title.

On your blog list three sports teams that have the word ‘fern’ in their title. Beside each team’s name, post a picture of their uniform. Then, at the bottom of your blog post tell us which of the three uniforms you like best and why.

I think the best uniform is the Black Fearns uniform because there not focusing on the detail and its something basic also because I love rugby and rugby is my hobby thats why I chose Black Fearns as the best uniform out of these three uniforms.

DAY 2: Forest Life

Activity 1: Giants Among Us [4 points]

 

New Zealand has a really special environment. Many of the plants and trees found in New Zealand are not found anywhere else in the world. These plants and trees are endemic to our country.  In New Zealand, one of the largest and longest living endemic trees is the NZ Kauri tree. Kauri are mainly found in three regions of New Zealand: the Coromandel, Auckland and Northland. The largest Kauri tree in the country is in the Waipoua Forest in Northland. It is called Tāne Mahuta. Some people refer to it as the ‘Lord of the Forest.’

Thousands of people go to visit Tāne Mahuta every year. Would you like to be one of those people who got to see Tāne Mahuta in real life? Why or why not?

I would love to visit the Tāne Mahuta so I can try musure the sise and lenth of the tree and I would love to go there because its the biggest tree in New Zealand. Also so I can be with nature and breath the freesh air and lastly I want to go there because thats were my cousins live. So thats why I want to go to Tāne Mahuta.

There are around 4.794 million people in my beautiful country New Zealand. 77 percent of that amount lives in the North Island of New Zealand. Some of that 77 percent of people live in Auckland and that is where my family and I are from. Auckland is a beautiful place  to live at there’s lovely restaurants and delicious food. Also you will be amazed when you see the lovely view of Auckland and did you know that Auckland is the biggest city in New Zealand. The only thing my family doesn't like is the traffic because everywhere we go there’s traffic. The thing my family love’s about Auckland is that there are no guns and no crime. Where we live it peaceful but not in the weekend’s because my neighbours always fight when they drink to much but besides, that I feel good to call Auckland my home.

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points]

1.The Maori name for New Zealand means the
long white cloud.

2.The largest city is Auckland (where I live) but Wellington is the
capital of New Zealand.

3.New Zealand doesn't have many people compared to
other countries and is one of the world’s least populated places.

The Weekend

Guess what I did in the weekend. I went to my cousins birthday he turned 1 I was excited.

I went with my 9 brothers and my parents.

When we arrived we were at chipmunks I was jumping up and down. When we went inside I ran right to the slides and the playground but my mum spotted me with my shoes on so I had to take it off and had to sit at the table to pray for food.

After praying we ate the food it was delicious. I was stuffed but it didn't stop me from playing so I went to a place that you and throw balls around and put some balls in a cannon and shoot people.

Then we prayed again and ate some more. But it was chocolate cake and ice cream and chop suey and and Popsicle also chicken,pig and horse.

Then we went to play laser tag when I got shot I fell and I tripped but it was crack up when I tripped one person and 5 more people fell on that person that I tripped. When we went home we went pass these two strangers and we shouted MATE MA'A TONGA BABY and then we drove off laughing.

When we got home I Jumped into bed tucked up and went to sleep I felt like sleeping beauty. 

THE END 

For The Birds

2 little  bluebirds sitting on a line one poke the other and then came 9.They all sat together poking and hurting each other until a big bird came sinise he was different the little blue bird  they started mocking the big bird.

They continued mocking the big bird until the big bird flew over and made the line go down he was like 100 pounds.

The little birds pushed the big bird off the line but luckily his feet was glued on to the line so the little birds started poking on his feet until he fell off.

When he finally fell off it started  raining feathers then the little birds came down they had no feathers and the big  bird laughed and the little birds felt embarrassed.

The moral of this story is to stop bullying and to not make fun of other people just because they look different.   

First Aid

On monday 10th september Mr munnik came from red cross came to teach us about first aid we learnt about the stable side position to do that you have to place your hand on your casualty shoulder and your other hand on the hips and pull to your side then place your hand on the casualty's forehead and place your other hand under the casualty's chin and tilt the head upwards so they don't swallow their tongue.

Monster or friend?

Once upon a time a little girl with bright blonde hair went to fetch some water. It was night time, so she had to be careful. She heard some noises. She was feeling scared and frightened when she looked at the moon. It suddenly turned into a MONSTER.

That monster looked like Mike Wazowski because it had one big eye. It was invisible and a lot bigger. She was so scared but then the monster showed he wasn’t going to eat her. The monster helped the little girl get the bucket of water out of the well.

Then the one eyed monster went back to the moon where it belonged and the little girl and the monster lived happily ever after.

What makes a good friend

These are some things that I think that make
a good friend

• They forgive and forget
• They encourage others
• They don’t break your promises
• They help each other

I want to be a rugby because I want to be like my
dad.

When i’m older I want to be a rugby player because

in the tonga team.So I need to study hard in school
and to be on my best behavior.

Also to listen to the coach and to work hard to

Earth's sister - Venus

Venus was formed 4.6 billion years ago. It is named after a Roman Goddess of Love and Beauty.
It is the hottest planet in our solar system. The average temperature on Venus is 864 degrees
Fahrenheit. Venus was discovered in 1761 by Russian Polymath.

Venus is thought to be made out of central iron core, rocky mantle and silicate crust.

Also Venus is sometimes called Earth's sister because their size and mass is similar and it takes
225 days to orbit the sun. Venus has no moons.

The atmosphere on Venus is 92 time stronger than Earth. The clouds of Venus are giant acid
rain clouds.

No one has ever been on Venus because it's too hot and you will be probably be toasted.

The length of day on Venus is 116d 18h 0m. Also Venus is the brightest planet and is known
as the morning star and the evening star.

Venus is 108.2 million km away from the Sun and 261 million km away from Earth. Venus is
the only planet in the Solar System to be named after a female figure and Venus has a very weak
magnetic field.

Financial Literacy

This week we were so lucky because we had come PwC come

Glenbrae School to teach us about Financial Literacy. They told us how to be

wise with money and we had so much fun. I enjoyed it when

we had to do skits and it was so funny I couldn't breathe. We

also learnt about how to be trustworthy and identity theft. I really enjoyed

learning about money and how to save, borrow and spend it.

I am so grateful for them taking time out and coming to

Glenbrae School.

The Earth spins  on its axis is an  line passing through the North and South Pole and if it is dark in the south pole its day in the north pole.

Nian is a mythical creature which comes to eat
people on Chinese New Year. The village aways
go to find shelter up on the mountains. Then a
traveler came to the village and he was hungry
but only a generous old lady gave him a plate of
dumplings and a place to sleep. Then the traveler
 told the old lady that Nian was scared of loud
noises music and the colour red so she done all
that the man said. Nian came looking for food
then he heard loud noises and music and he saw
the colour red then nian ran for his life and never
returned.
